Hynix Plans Business Expansion in India
Hynix Semiconductor, the world's second-biggest computer chipmaker after Samsung Electronics, is expanding its business in India, apart from China and Taiwan.

The manufacturer of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips said Sunday that it plans to use skilled Indian IT workforces in its long-term strategy to boost the CMOS image sensor (CIS) business, one of the "next growth engines".

CIS is used for cameras in cell phones. The global CIS market is expected to reach $6.3 billion in 2011 in accordance with rising demand for high-end phones, according to industry estimates.

The expansion comes after its CEO Kim Jong-kap discussed with Indian Commerce Minister Kamal Nath in New Delhi Friday the possibility of solidifying bilateral relations in various sectors from memory chips to non-memory chips.

"We are looking at the possibility of using more IT-related Indian laborers as the demand for chips with applied technologies has soared," Kim was quoted as saying.

"Hynix has significantly contributed to the growth of Indian IT-related hardware by supplying high-quality products. We hope that the company will maintain such policies," the Indian minister was quoted as saying.

The chipmaker has been leading the Indian DRAM market since 1999 with the share of over 45 percent, according to industry estimates. Hynix transformed its small office in Bangalore to a sales post in 2006.

The company, which has been making every effort to survive in the highly-volatile global computer memory chip industry through a "technology tie-up" with Taiwanese rivals, has recently signed a partnership agreement with SiliconFile Technologies for the development of its newer CIS business.
